This first habit is very dear to me as I recently had a baby at 42 years old.

And that’s not enough sleep.

As we get older, we have more and more issues with sleep. Either you can’t fall asleep at night because you’re so revved up…

Or you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep…

Or you wake up every morning at 6 am no matter WHAT time you fall asleep. You need 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

The average American gets 6.

One study out of John Hopkins shoed a direct link between a lack of sleep and a buildup of a beta-amyloid
a toxic protein that builds up and forms the plaques that cause Alzheimer’s disease.

Even worse, another study on 470,000 people showed that those that slept 6 hours or fewer a night have a 48% great chance of getting and/or dying from a heart attack and a 15% greater chance of getting and/or dying from a stroke.

What happens in your brain when you sleep?
You can think of your brain as a big city. During the day, every time you have a thought or feeling or do an action, a little bit of trash accumulates in your brain’s communication highways.

When you sleep at night, the street sweepers and cleaning crews come out and clean up the roads and sidewalks, wash the windows and fix the potholes.

When you don’t get enough sleep at night, your brain starts to look a little like San Francisco… a beautiful city, but pretty dirty.

After decades of a lack of sleep, it looks like a 3rd world country and you’re going to need a bulldozer to get it clean.

Sleep is everything to me and I put it before everything, even eating right and working out.

And I haven’t been sick in over 4 years because of it. Every time I start to feel just a little tickle in my throat or my sinuses tighten, I go take a nap and I don’t get sick.


So, what are your solutions to not being able to sleep?

Well, as a very short term solution, you can use sleeping pills. But, they have the exact same side effects as a poor night of sleep – Groggy, foggy brain, anxiousness, mental slowness and long term, they make it harder to fall asleep.

So here are some real fixes. They may take longer to work than a sleeping pill, but they’re a long term solution.

I like to say that sleep is the one thing in life that the harder you try, the more likely you are to fail.

So, don’t try to fall asleep, try to stay awake. Stare at a dot on a wall and try to keep your eyes open, like back in your school days when you were trying to hard not to fall asleep in class.

The next thing is one that most of us know already, but don’t follow – Do not lie in bed frustrated. Your brain works on associations so if your bed is a stressful place, you won’t be able to sleep well.

Your bed should only be used for sleep and sex.


Get up after 30 minutes - it takes the average woman 22 minutes to fall asleep – a full 10 minutes longer than men - and go do something calm like listen to some soft music.

Next, don’t have a clock or your phone next to you. Looking at the time only increases your level of the stress chemical, cortisol, in your brain and makes it harder to fall asleep.

Cool your room down to 60-67 degrees. Our bodies natural cool when we sleep so you can manipulate this process by making the room cool.

The last thing is if you’re anxious or distressed at bedtime, the best medicine may be a face full of ice-cold water. When you’re in a full-on state, your nervous system desperately needs to be reset to help you calm down.

Submerging your face in a bowl of cold water triggers an involuntary phenomenon called the Mammalian Dive Reflex, which lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. Then it’s off to bed with a soothed system.

Or course, cut out alcohol, don’t drink anything 2 hours before bed, have a bedtime routine and do some deep breathing.

The last thing you can do for a good, restful night is actually the next thing you need to start doing in your life if you aren’t already for your brian health….

And that’s meditation.


Meditation isn’t voodoo science anymore.There are over 1,800 different scientific studies on the benefits of meditation.

It creates real, biological changes to the actual structure of your brain.It grows your brain.

Studies show that meditation significantly increases the blood flow to your brain after just 8 weeks.

Researchers have found that the average thickness of the cortex – the area of higher brain functions like thought and actions – of 50-year old meditator’s brains were similar to that of 20-year old’s!

When you meditate you have:

  • Faster response times
  • Notable improvements in mood
  • Less anxiety and stress
  • Less fatigue

Your brain has different brain waves and just like you need to exercise for your heart, you need to exercise going between these different brain wave states.

First, you have gamma, which is the brain wave state of being in ‘flow’. You hear your super athletes talk about being in flow when they perform at their best.

Then you have beta, which is a high performance, high stress state. This is your go go go state and where you spend most of your waking hours.

Then, you have alpha, which is your calm, creative state. This is the state where you are going to make your best decisions and have your best ideas.

It is where you want to go when you meditate.

Then you have theta, which is the state between awake and asleep. This is where Buddhist monks go when they meditate.

Finally, you have delta, which is your sleep state.

Staying in high beta all day, like most of us do, is causing a build of the stress chemical cortisol.

And this is VERY bad for your memory. See, your memory center produces a chemical that fights cortisol.

But if you have too much cortisol in your brain, over time it actually eats away at your memory center so it can’t produce enough of the cortisol fighting chemical. From there, it is a downward spiral.

And, cortisol causes inflammation in the brain – the root of most diseases.

When you meditate, you are reducing the amount of cortisol in your brain.

And you’re able to control your brain wave states for better cognition and a bigger brain.


I have a friend that has worked 12 hours a day for 25 years as a stressed out stock broker. Now in her mid 50’s, she is experiencing many recurring health issues.

She asked me how to start meditating and all I can recommend is baby steps. It is extremely difficult to learn to control your thoughts and come down from a high beta brain wave state.

The next toxic thing you need to stop doing every day is to stop feeding it garbage. 

Your brain is only 2-5 pounds, so 3% of your total body weight. But it uses 20% of the calories you eat.

Garbage in, garbage out. Food effects your emotions, your personality, the quality and quantity of your memories, and even WHO you are as a person…

You are what you eat.

You need to feed your brain the right fuel in the right amounts to stay strong and have will power.

The first toxic food you need to cut back on or cut out all together is sugar, and specifically high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
HFCS is in 80% of the foods on the grocery store shelves, but it didn’t exist in our diets until 1975.

And there is a 1 to 1 correlation with the introduction of HFCS and obesity.

Sugar is not a stable source of energy for our brains and we get sugar crashes.

But more than that, it produces the stress chemical adrenaline, which can leave you feeling anxious, moody, exhausted and even depressed.

Sugar forms free radicals in your brain and destroys the communication highway in your brain.

This can have serious repercussion in how well you remember instructions, process ideas and manage your moods.

I recommend 40 grams of sugar a day.

The average American eats 153 grams a day.


Limit the amount of salt you take in every day as well. Our processed, packaged foods pack a ton of salt.

Too much salt has been shown to increase your risk of cognitive decline and creates memory loss.

I recommend no more than 1,500 mg of salt a day. The average American eats 3,400 mg of salt a day.

Let’s get to the good stuff
– the stuff your brain needs.

The first is vitamin B-12. This is found in diary, meats and fish. 

If you are vegetarian or vegan, you need so supplement with B-12. B-12 transforms the food you eat into usable energy for your brain to perform.

Up to 40% of older adults have a b-12 deficiency.

This leads to:

  • Mental fogginess,
  • Memory problems,
  • Depression,
  • Anxiety,
  • Confusion,
  • Disorientation,
  • Hallucinations,

And long term, B-12 deficiency can lead to permanent nerve and brain damage and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Another critical nutrient for your brain is DHA, which is found in omega 3 fatty acids.

DHA reduces inflammation in the brain.

Researchers have found that people with behavioral problems, ADHD patients and people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease all have lower than normal DHA levels.

Two studies done on students in Sweden and replicated in South Africa found that giving children DHA supplements improved their grades by 15% in 6 months.

I recommend you aim for 500-1,000 mg of DHA a day through your food – lots of fatty fish, or supplementation.

Speaking of supplements, I believe that 95% of supplements are crap so I want to teach you 2 quick tricks when it comes to buying supplements.

Remember in the news last year when they reported that the bulk of all supplements on the store shelves at GNC, Target and Walmart had ZERO of the ingredients they claimed on the label?

Instead, they found saw dust and rice powder. YUCK!

I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to spend my hard earned money on supplements, I want the best.

So, how do you find the best?

First, you should ask the supplement company for their Certificate of Analysis. This isn’t published, but if you ask, most reputable companies will give it to you.

It is a 3rd party analysis on the after manufactured product that shows you the EXACT ingredients in the supplement and at what dosages.

Speaking of dosages, dosages are one of the MOST important things to look for when it comes to taking supplements.

When you go to the doctor, he gives you a prescription that says what dosage to take how often. Why do they do this?

Because those dosages support the clinical trials.

There is a website called (again, no association) that not only lists the dosages for the supplements, it also shows the actual scientific studies behind the supplements.


Using this website, I can see in 2 minutes what the dosages I need to get the effect I want and to tell if a supplement is complete garbage.

For instance, this is a label of a competitor of ours for a supplement that claims to boost your memory and brain health.

In general, a supplement capsule can hold 750 mg of any blend of ingredients.

This one has a 2 capsule serving so they have 1,500 mg’s to work with.

Well, after just a quick check down the list, I can see that L-Taurine’s dosage is 500-2,000 mg and L-Tyrosine’s dosage is another 500-2,000 mg. I don’t need to look further.

This is a classic case of a company putting small traces of ingredients in their product so they can make claims, but you’re just flushing your money down the toilet.

And a quick comment about the caffeine they put it in it – there is this big push that you should ‘feel’ something when you take a supplement.
